What is HBOT?

HBOT stands for Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy. It is a medical treatment in which a patient breathes 100% oxygen in a pressurized chamber where oxygen is used as the medicine.

How does it work?

Breathing pressurized oxygen leads to dissolved oxygen molecules in the bloodstream that lead to the following benefits:

  • Increases oxygen delivery to injured tissues
  • Stops further tissue damage by reducing swelling
  • Promotes wound healing by;
  • Improving immune system response
  • Improving blood vessel formation
  • Preventing or reducing infection
  • Improves the effect of some antibiotics
  • Mobilizes stem cells
What are the benefits of hyperbaric oxygen therapy?

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy offers distinct therapeutic effects:

  • Increases oxygen delivery to injured tissues
  • Stops further tissue damage by reducing swelling
  • Promotes wound healing by;
  • Improving immune system response
  • Improving blood vessel formation
  • Preventing or reducing infection
  • Improves the effect of some antibiotics
  • Mobilizes stem cells
What conditions can be treated with Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy?

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy can be used to treat a variety of conditions.  However, there are a limited number of indications that HBOT has been approved for.  Approved conditions are generally covered by your health insurance provider. An unapproved condition may have promising clinical data but not yet approved by the FDA, will be approved on a case-by-case basis by our providers.

What does a hyperbaric treatment feel like?

Typically, patients feel a change of pressure in their ears, similar to the ascent of an airplane or driving over a mountain.  You may feel a temperature change while the pressure in the chamber is increased, comfortable when at pressure and chilly when pressure is decreased. You will be given blankets for your treatment upon request.

What kind of hyperbaric oxygen chambers are used at HyperHeal Hyberbarics?

We use the largest see-through state of the art medical grade monoplace chambers.  Our Sechrist and Perry Baromedical chambers meet all the federal and state regulations required for such treatments to be administered in a safe environment.

Will my health insurance cover HBOT treatments?

It all depends on your condition, insurance policy, and documented medical need. Approved conditions are generally reimbursable by private insurance and Medicare. Prior to any treatment, we will verify and go over any out-of-pocket costs, if there are any.  You may also check with your insurance company.

What if I don’t have health insurance?

If our provider team approves treatment for an unapproved/off label indication we offer an affordable cash-pay option.  Contact us at 410-433-4300 for more information

Are there any side effects of HBOT?

There are very few side effects involved with Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy.  Prior to starting treatment, potential side effects will be disclosed and explained in detail.

Will a doctor be present?

A medical provider will always be present before, during and after your treatment.

Is the staff at HyperHeal Hyperbarics certified?

All our supervising and medical staff are hyperbaric certified, experienced, and highly qualified.

How long is a treatment of HBOT?

The length and frequency of treatments will be individualized for each patient dependent on their condition.  The average treatment time is generally two hours.

How many treatments/sessions will I need?

A treatment plan is based on your diagnosis or condition. Some conditions need only 2-5 treatments, many other conditions require 20-40 treatments or more depending on the severity of the individual’s case.

How fast can a patient be seen?

Appointments are always available at all four locations.  Call us a 410-433-4300 to reserve your time slot today.

Can you miss treatments?

We do not recommend missing any of your treatments unless absolutely necessary.  Your healing period depends on your commitment to the recommended treatment and frequency prescribed.

Will care be coordinated with other doctors?

Absolutely!  We will coordinate and communicate your progress with your team of providers.

What can I do during treatment?

The only thing that a patient is required to do during treatment is to lay in the chamber, breathe normally and relax. Some patients prefer to sleep or watch TV during treatment. Our facility has a large library of DVDs to choose from.

Is there an age restriction to use HBOT?

Although there is no current age restriction for a patient for HBOT, we attend to minors on a case by case basis and treat adults of all ages.

If I have a prescription / referral from another provider for hyperbaric oxygen therapy, can I be treated at your facility?

We accept patient referrals from other providers and accept walk-in (self referrals).  All patients interested in hyperbaric oxygen therapy are required to have a consultation with one of our medical providers prior to treatment.

Is it better to go to a hospital-based or outpatient hyperbaric treatment center?

Simply put, we provide the same treatment in a much more comfortable atmosphere and don’t charge those expensive facility fees. Plus, we are led by the local area leaders in hyperbaric medicine and wound care. Additionally, our outpatient center meets nationally recognized guidelines and safety standards. That’s why we’re AAAHC approved!

How can I find out if an HBOT facility is reputable?

Provider profiles will list facility accreditations, institutional affiliations, and physician and equipment certifications. Accreditation by the AAAHC is an indication that our treatment center has met the highest standards of practice. The AAAHC educates its member clinicians and inspects and accredits select provider facilities.

Are more investigational studies being done to expand the list of approved indications?

Yes, trials and studies are being performed to expand the use of hyperbaric oxygen therapy.
